Fear that US recession will trigger global slump

A full-blown, prolonged recession in the United States is now inescapable, with the rest of the world set to be dragged into a severe slowdown despite this week's emergency cut in US interest rates, leading economists said at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Also, former USA Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said he's worried that an ``inevitable'' global recession will create a backlash

While USA claims this resolution will make it "more difficult for Iran to do business," Russia started more shipments of nuclear fuel to Iran this week,saying it was for peaceful nuclear power, allowed under law.

 

Tough Sanctions Are Watered Down

Still seeking ways to crack down on Iran for uranium enrichment, the White House sought tougher sanctions. But the compromise resolution agreed to by the UN Security Council incorporates weakened language that calls only for "vigilance" or "monitoring" of financial and military institutions without most of the tough economic sanctions sought by the Bush administration

Iran claims it has a right to develop peaceful nuclear power programs.

White House seeks military "agreement," with Iraq

Bush wants government in Baghdad sign a contract giving the USA broad authority to conduct combat operations, stay in permanent bases, maintain the power to detain Iraqi prisoners and guarantee soldiers & civilian contractors legal protections from Iraqi law,

Critics demand that Bush must come to Congress to have Congress agree upon such a formal treaty. Critics also worry that the White House seeks to bind the next president by locking in Mr. Bush’s policies with this deal.

Car Bomb Kills a Top Lebanese Terrorism Investigator


Campaign of assassinations and political violence continues.

A powerful car bomb killed one of Lebanon’s top terrorism investigators It was the latest in a long series of attacks aimed at Lebanese politicians, journalists and security officials.

The attack suggested a quickening pace and a widening circle of targets in Lebanon’s persistent political violence. A car bomb aimed at an American Embassy vehicle killed three passers-by 10 days ago. Another bombing wounded two United Nations soldiers in southern Lebanon this month, and one of Lebanon’s top army generals was killed by a car bomb last month. A new president still has yet to be appointed after months of disagreement in Parliament.

AG Nixes Special Prosecutor in CIA Case


Mukasey

No plans for special prosecutor to investigate CIA tapes

Attorney General Michael Mukasey said he doesn't plan for a special prosecutor to investigate whether the CIA broke the law when it destroyed videotapes of terror interrogations.

He also avoided repeated questions about whether he considers water boarding an illegal form of torture and said it was imperative to renew wiretap laws set to expire soon.


Thousands flee Gaza after holes blown in border walls

Tens of thousands of Palestinians poured from the Gaza Strip into Egypt Wednesday after masked gunmen with explosives destroyed most of the seven-mile wall dividing the border town of Rafah.

Israeli blockades impoverished territory.

The Gazans crossed on foot, in cars or riding donkey carts to buy desperately needed food and medical supplies and the other basics needed for life and survival.
