Putin tells NATO
'Keep away from our borders'


Vladimir Putin told NATO that it would become a "direct threat" if it expanded further east.

Croatia and Albania won invitations his week during the NATO summit to join the military alliance. The Russian president yesterday gave warning that Ukraine and Georgia must not become part of this western military alliance but NATO leaders pledged to eventually open the path to joining for these two countries, possibly as early as December, details.

"The emergence of a powerful military bloc at our borders will be seen as a direct threat to Russian security," Mr Putin told Nato heads of state at a summit in the Romanian capital, Bucharest.

Dalai Lama says protests show Tibet's 'anguish' under Chinese rule


In a strongly worded statement, the Tibetan spiritual leader said people in Tibet felt "deep resentment against the suppression of the rights of Tibetan people (and) lack of religious freedom."

The Dalai Lama claims the recent anti-government demonstrations in Tibet were "outbursts of long pent-up physical and mental anguish" that proved most Tibetans want freedom from Chinese rule. More>
