Bush Announces Halt
to Troop Withdrawals from Iraq


Bush said "serious and complex challenges" remain in Iraq that will prevent further withdrawals of U.S. troops

Bush set the course of the war in a speech following two days of testimony this week before a skeptical Congress by General Petraeus and the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker. details.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates also testifies to Congress this week that he sees no chance that the number of U.S. troops in Iraq will drop to 100,000 by the end of the year, guaranteeing a heavy American military presence to the end of the Bush presidency.

Top Bush officials approved harsh interrogation techniques against terrorist suspects and asked the Justice Department to endorse their legality.

Claims made that President Bush was 'insulated,' from the torture discussions at the White House.

John Yoo, White House legal advisor who drafted an 81-page memo in March 2003, giving the Pentagon extensive leeway to harm detainees during interrogations --- without fear of legal consequences --- subpoenaed by House Judiciary Committee to appear May 6th.

Fair Vote Count in Zimbabwe Elections


Southern African Development Community, a regional bloc of 14 nations, also implicitly acknowledged reports that the governing party had sponsored violent attacks on opposition supporters.

Opposition also claims Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's backers are mobilizing militants and reviving resentments over white-owned farms, an issue that propelled Mugabe to power in 1980, in order to drum up support before a probable presidential runoff election. More

Israel to bar UN rights official

UN official appointed to investigate Israeli human rights abuses denied entry to Israel and Palestinian territories.

Israel said it made the decision after Richard Falk told the BBC he stood by comments he made comparing Israel's actions in Gaza to those of the Nazis.

Mr Falk said he drew the comparison between the treatment of Palestinians with the Nazi record of collective atrocity because of what he described as the massive Israeli punishment directed at the entire population of Gaza.

Xinhua, the state-run news agency, said the Chinese police had a confession of a plot to tarnish the coming Summer Olympics in Beijing

Nine Tibetan Buddhist monks have been accused of a bomb attack

Chinese officials said the monks' homemade bomb exploded in a government building in eastern Tibet, on 23 March.

The alleged bombing is the first to be reported in Tibet since the anti-China protests began 10 March in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa.
