Pentagon Wary Of Tehran's Expanding Nuclear Program And Support Of Iraqi Insurgents

A second American aircraft carrier steamed into the Persian Gulf on Tuesday as the Pentagon ordered military commanders to develop new options for attacking Iran.

"What the Iranians are doing is killing American servicemen and women inside Iraq," said Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.

U.S. officials are also concerned by Iranian harassment of U.S. ships in the Persian Gulf as well as Iran's still growing nuclear program.

Senate Panel OKs Missile Defense Plans
International Opposition Increases


The Senate Armed Services Committee approved Bush's request for U.S. missile-defense installations in the Czech Republic and Poland; approves study of 'Star Wars.'

The proposal, must be approved by the full Senate and reconciled with measure in the House of Representatives. Approval for the project by the parliaments of the two European countries also required.

The Armed Services Committee also said it would assess the feasibility of a space-based interceptor for missile defense ('Star Wars').
