Sadr City Devastated

WITH U.S. backup, Iraqi Troops Take Charge of Sadr City in Swift Push

The stage for the operation was set two months ago. Shiite militias began firing rockets at the fortified Green Zone from Sadr City in late March in response to the offensive in Basra. As a result, American and Iraqi forces moved into the two southernmost sectors of Sadr City.

American helicopters circled over former Mahdi Army centers of activity like the Sadr office and a market, and around the Imam Ali and Sadr Hospitals, now covered with Iraqi forces.

At a press conference in Baghdad, Maj. Gen. Qasim Atta, the spokesman for the security plan in Baghdad, said Tuesday’s troop deployment was the first stage of “Operation Peace.”

Sadr City residents must comply with three conditions: not to have illegal weapons, not to violate orders during searches and raids and to hand over weapons.

Lebanon MPs to vote in president

lebanon_president

The parliament in Lebanon is expected to elect a new president and end a deadlock which has left the country without a head of state since November.

Last weeks clashes were triggered by government attempts to outlaw Hezbollah's private telephone network and reassign Beirut airport's security chief, a Hezbollah supporter.

Lebanon has been in political crisis since late 2006 when the pro-Syrian groups led by Hezbollah left a national unity coalition cabinet, demanding more power and a veto over government decisions.

The Israeli invasion and war of 2006 led to years of instability.

The crisis turned violent again two weeks ago when street battles between armed supporters of the factions left at least 65 people dead.

MDC Leader Back in Zimbabwe

Morgan Tsvangirai left Zimbabwe six weeks ago after claiming he was the target of a military assassination plot.

The former union leader and now presidential candidate has survived at least three assassination attempts. "If Mugabe thinks he has beaten people into submission, he will have a rude shock on the 27th," he said.

The violence poses serious questions about whether the runoff can be free and fair. "Mugabe once led our people to freedom," Tsvangirai said, "Now he can set his people free from poverty, hunger and fear" by stepping down.

Israel Ready to Return Golan ?

golan_heights

There is outrage in Israel after Syria's leader claimed that he received a major territorial concession from the Jewish state.

Zalman Shoval is a former Israeli ambassador to Washington and member of the hawkish opposition Likud party. He says offering the strategic high ground is a catastrophic mistake.

"It's certainly not advancing the chances of peace; actually it's advancing the risk of a future Syrian threat if indeed we were to give up the Golan," he said.

Shoval says making peace gestures to Syria harms the global war on terror.
