U.S. Fails to Sway Iran at Nuke Talks


USA being at Geneva meeting marks the highest-level diplomatic contact with Tehran in decades


Under Secretary of State William Burns, (sitting, third from right) was at the Geneva meeting of Six Western Powers and Iran, but the Bush White House said, he would 'not negotiate,' but was there only to listen.

U.S. and Iranian envoys Saturday had their highest-level diplomatic contact in 29 years, but the seven-nation gathering in Geneva on Tehran's nuclear program was quickly brought to a halt by Iran's refusal to say whether it would suspend uranium enrichment, details.

The Six Western Powers give Iran two-weeks to agree to freeze its uranium enrichment program yesterday or face further international isolation, details.

US official says "We hope the Iranian people understand that their leaders need to make a choice between cooperation, which would bring benefits to all, and confrontation, which can only lead to further isolation," details.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad gave an upbeat assessment. calling the talks "a step forward." details
