Russia Condemns US Missile Deal in Poland


Despite fierce opposition from Moscow, the United States and Poland signed a long-stalled agreement on Wednesday to place an American missile defense base on Polish territory, about 100 miles from the Russian border.

Russia says the United States was violating post-cold-war agreements not to base its troops in former Soviet bloc states and said this action “cannot go unpunished,” details.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said, "The missiles are (defensive) and aimed at no one...Are intended to shot down missiles from Iran...and that it was bizarre the Russians would threaten a nuclear attack against it," details.

PM Putin suggested last month another appropriate response might be using Cuba as a refueling stop for nuclear-capable bombers, details.

The leader of Pakistan's main ruling party says he is optimistic the country's six-week-old governing coalition will remain intact despite the resignations of nine (9) Cabinet ministers of a key coalition partner, details.

Zardari admits there is still disagreement between his Pakistan People's Party and the Pakistan Muslim League of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who want the unconditional reinstatement of judges deposed by President Pervez Musharraf last year. details

Zardari wants the deposed chief justice to resign or accept conditional reinstatement, but a letter Zardari sent to the chief justice was returned unread, details.

Zardari's political party (PPP) claims Zardari wants to delay the restoration of the judiciary until after Musharraf leaves the country, since he is apprehensive that a proactive judiciary might challenge the ‘safe exit’ for Musharraf. - but others think Zardari is afraid the chief justice will void the immunity given to Zardari by Musharraf in  recent declaration of National Reconciliation, details.

The U.S. wants a Pakistan ally against the Taliban,and although Zardari is considered the 'default candidate,' in this power-struggle support for the U.S. position and policies is not guaranteed, details.
