McCain Picks Woman Governor for VP
Sen. John McCain announced Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice presidential candidate, calling her "the running mate who can best help me shake up Washington."

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin made history Thursday when her party nominated her to be the first female Republican vice presidential nominee. Palin described herself as a fighter against corruption, a bipartisan reformer, a firm believer in free-market capitalism" and "a lifelong Alaskan who grew up hunting and fishing," details.

Zardari has promised a tougher fight against members of the Taliban and Al Qaeda ensconced in the nation’s tribal areas. Last week American commandos attacked a village near the Afghan border in what American military officials said could be a continuing campaign in Pakistan’s tribal region, details.
But the Pakistan parliament condemned the U.S.-led assault in the border region. "[The USA & Zardari] are trying to change the perception of the people that this is our war.," a spokesperson said, details.
The next day the foreign minister, Qureshi, vowed to defend Pakistan against foreign intrusion. "We will not compromise on any violation of our sovereignty," he said, details.
And Zardari’s ruthless ascent to the presidency of Pakistan has spread fear among some relatives and rivals, details.
Pakistan, has been buffeted by more than 18 months of political turmoil that saw Bhutto's assassination and Musharraf's fall from power.
There is no popular vote for president, merely a few days of behind-the-scenes jockeying in parliament for power.
