I'm not a military general, but I thought we could start the invasion from Thailand. Move west, cross the Bridge of the River Kwai, connect to the old Burma railroad, and cut the government off at the pass. (s-a-r-c-a-s-m) Attack Burma? Are we mad!? (not sarcasm). Political leaders now also talk of invading Iran because they may have nuclear weapons in 4 or 5 years and we claim they are hassling our efforts in Iraq. Congress gave Bush authority to invade Iraq only for the one specific purpose of getting rid of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. Iraq didn't have any WMD's. So we invaded Iraq using deliberate fabricated lies. We are threatening Russia by planning to put missiles on it's border and pretend to not understand their concern.
Venezuela is in our target sights because (oil), because they may be resisting cross-border attacks by the US-funded, oppressive Columbian government. With our support, Lebanon has been made a wreck, a disaster zone for years. We fire missiles into Somalia every other week, and funded the Ethiopian invasion. Now we're also insisting the new Pakistan government not talk truce to the Taliban. Insisting Iraqi factions in the government not talk cease fire. We support Saudi Arabian and Egyptian dictators, thug government in Columbia, etc. We don't like China hosting the Olympics. We bad mouth Burma during their crisis.
Welcome to the Global War. Maybe someday Congress will discuss all this. Maybe someday there will even be honest reasons given to the American people. Maybe the Constitutional demand that only Congress can declare a war will someday be obeyed, as is desperately needed and the most significant requirement for war, as realized by this nation's founders.
Instead of signing up for this madness of 'Global War,' and trash talking the world, let's continue on the path of electing better leaders.

The Time article (above) was hard to believe.Looking at te picture of destroyed homes (on left), that is the first obvious conclusion that also jumps into my mind. (s-a-r-c-a-s-m) The reason given is that Burma won't take aid from the USA, aid to help it's disaster victims. Because Burma won't take our aid we should attack them!? One immediate thought is that since Burma won't take French aid, German aid, Spanish aid, (nobody's aid but the UN, )then why don't the French, Germans, or Spanish, etc., invade Burma? Burma is governed by really bad people but some people think killing hundreds of thousands of Iraqi's for a war started with deliberate lies is also bad. A second immediate thought is why not just cooperate with others, send our aid through the accepted agencies, the UN or Doctors Without Borders? We are clearly messing with the whole world in our so-called "Global War." We are in a "Global War," although no such war has been declared or even discussed by Congress. It's all done on the sly. All hidden behind words of "supplemental appropriations," stipulation of force resolutions, covert actions, everything but the truth. Our USA world-wide aggression also fueled by a non-stop litany of how bad all these others nations are. The real deal behind the Global War is oil; oil and Israel... oil, Israel and apparently world domination; a global war. We (US, Israel,EU,etc.) should offer mutually beneficial deals with other nation and stop trying to beat everyone to death. Some would say this is impossible but in truth and good faith we have never tried. Because Burma won't take our aid we should attack them, this appears our more common policy. Of course this idea is extreme and not coming from the government (yet) but what is coming from the government is a lot of trash talk and pointing out the bad things about the bad people in Burma. You don't have to be a doctor or a diplomat to realize such trash talk, at this time, is not helpful. We want to "help," Burma; well, help them. If I was hit by a drunk driver, I wouldn't expect nor appreciate an arriving police officer to start talking about all my unpaid parking tickets, nor that time I was speeding on Main St., nor even that one hit and run accident where I ran over a blind old lady being led across the street by a boy scount. (none of this true). The point of the above, not true story about being hit by a drunk driver is obvious: Give the person the First Aid and help and deal with the traffic violations (or whatever), later, at a more appropriate time in the more appropriate forum. |
| FOOTNOTE* - Since writing this editorial the USA has agreed to the terms of the military junta in Burma - the U.S. is sending in shiploads and planes full of aid, not sending in U.S. soldiers or sailers, turning the aid over to the Burma government as well as working through established internaitonal aid agencies, details. (Great! - and we could have done without the trash talk). | |
